Il leggendario chitarrista portoricano Yomo Toro, maestro del cuatro, è stato ricoverato in ospedale per una crisi renale causata dalla pressione alta ed è grave.
Purtroppo le condizioni di fragilità in cui si trova impediscono ai medici di intervenire con un trapianto.

Nato a Ensenada, Portorico, figlio di un chitarrista amatoriale, Yomo Toro ha alle spalle una carriera che dura da cinquant’anni come uno dei più rispettati musicisti latini di New York.
Lo strumento che lo ha reso famoso è il cuatro, una chitarra portoricana a 4 corde che discende dalla Vilhuela spagnola.
Dopo il primo atterraggio a New York nel 1953 con la sua band, Los 4 Aces, Yomo si imbarca in una serie di tour per i Caraibi, per poi stabilirsi nel 1956 nel Bronx. Ha suonato con il Trio Los Panchos nei primi anni sessanta e registrato quattro dischi con loro, incluso uno con il cantante Eydie Gormé.
Subito dopo inizia a registrare con la leggendaria etichetta Fania, entrando a far parte della famosissima orchestra Fania All-Stars. Fra la fine degli anni sessanta e i primi anni settanta è protagonista dello show televisivo Yomo Toro Show trasmesso a New York sul canale 41.Lo show, nel quale vengono intervistati molti artisti latini, dura sette anni.
Il 1969 è un anno particolarmente fecondo per Yomo Toro. Registra Tribute to Arsenio con la Larry Harlow Orchestra – un album di salsa che ne influenzerà molti altri.Toro entra in contatto con altre leggende della salsa nel 1970 quando registra l’album natalizio Asalto Navideño con Willie Colon e Hector Lavoe, combinando i nuovi suoni della salsa di New York con la musica tradizionale natalizia di Portorico. L’album è, e continua ad essere, uno dei dischi Fania più venduti di tutti i tempi.
La sua carriera continua per tutti gli anni settanta, ottanta e novanta con oltre 150 partecipazioni in altrettanti dischi, di cui 20 come solista con la Fania, Island, Rounder e Green Linnet Records.
Ritorna a lavorare in televisione e al cinema, suona in diversi spot pubblicitari di importanti società internazionali e lavora alle colonne sonore di numerosi film, fra i quali Crossover Dreams con Ruben Blades e il film di Woody Allen il dittatore del libero Stato di Bananas. Spazia in molti generi diversi, registrando con Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, Linda Rondstadt e David Byrne.
Nel 1994, Yomo inizia a suonare e registrare con i Latin Legends con Larry Harlow e Aldaberto Santiago. Fra gli ultimi lavori ricordiamo Cortijo’s Tribe CD con i Zon del Barrio’s ed il singolo “Homenaje al Sonero Mayor” dove Yomo vola su assoli che gli consentono di allungare ed espandere il suo virtuosismo sulle stringhe.

Born in Ensenada, Puerto Rico as the son of an amateur guitarist,Yomo Toro grew to have a five-decade career as one of New York City’s best respected Latin musicians. Toro’s instrument of choice was the cuatro, a Puerto Rican 4-string guitar-like instrument descended from the Spanish Vilhuela.
After first landing in New York in 1953 with his band, Los 4 Aces, Yomo embarked on a series of tours of the Caribbean, finally settling for good in the Tremont section of the Bronx in 1956. He played with Trio Los Panchos in the early ’60s and recorded four albums with them, including one featuring Eydie Gormé.Soon after that he began recording with the legendary Fania label, eventually joining their world-famous house band, the Fania All-Stars. During the late ’60s and early ’70s he hosted a tv show called the Yomo Toro Show on New York’s Channel 41.The show, which featured interviews and entertainment from a host of Latin personalities, was on for seven years. 1969 was an especially fruitful year for Toro. He recorded Tribute to Arsenio with the Larry Harlow Orchestra — an incredibly influential salsa album.Toro also got to hook up with some legends in 1970 when he recorded the classic Asalto Navideño with Willie
Colon and Hector Lavoe, combining the new sounds of NewYork salsa with traditional Puerto Rican Christmas music.The album was, and continues to be, one of Fania’s best-selling products of all time.
In the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s Toro’s career continued non-stop. He appeared on over 150 albums, recording over 20 solo albums for Fania, Island, Rounder and Green Linnet Records. He broke back into television and film, playing on commercials for several major international companies and working on the soundtracks for several films, including Crossover Dreams with Ruben Blades and Woody Allen’s Bananas. He broke out into many different genres, recording with Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, Linda Rondstadt and David Byrne. In 1994, Yomo began playing and recording in the Latin Legends with Larry Harlow and Aldaberto Santiago. Today, his rapid fire guitar strains are heard over Zon del Barrio’s Cortijo’s Tribe CD and the single “Homenaje al Sonero Mayor” where Yomo soars on solos that let him stretch and expand his virtuosity on strings.
